Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to oversee drilling operations
   • Access, interpret and apply overseeing drilling documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential hazards, risks and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for the work activity
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for an emergency
   • Resolve coordination requirements with others at the site prior to commencing, during and on completion of work activities
2. Organise drilling of surface hole
   • Obtain copies of contract and well program, check and implement strategies designed and communicate to relevant personnel
   • Select, obtain and confirm plant, tools, equipment and personnel are on hand for surface hole operations
   • Prepare and check integrity of equipment, inspect casing and joints for damage
   • Maintain written records and liaise with service companies to rectify faults
3. Supervise and participate in nippling up and pressure testing
   • Organise equipment and nippling-up requirements for drilling out
   • Identify and carry out pressure testing of all blow out prevention (BOP) equipment
   • Carry out rig up to drill out
   • Monitor drill out safety processes and test gauge leak off
4. Organise rig up and rig up to spud
   • Assign crews to specific jobs and implement performance measures to monitor operations
   • Implement monitoring strategies and checks in place to ensure integrity of operations
   • Confirm verbal and written work instructions with operator’s representative for drilling hole
   • Conduct crew meetings on total rig safety
   • Report damage to plant, tools and equipment, repair or recommend corrective actions
   • Ensure mud is mixed as per drilling program
   • Carry out pre-spud safety inspections with circulation and spud-in established
   • Undertake surveys and report variations to operator’s representative
   • Maintain written records
   • Supervise running in and cementing of casing with operators representative
5. Complete and abandon well
   • Supervise completion and well abandonment with operator’s representative
   • Make preparations to release rig and coordinate shutdown preparation list
   • Abandon well
6. Conduct housekeeping activities
   • Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment
   • Report issues identified with plant, tools and equipment

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of overseeing drilling operations including:

identifying, addressing and reporting potential hazards and risks

controlling identified hazards

carrying out emergency response

identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues

preparing written records and reports

obtaining and checking correct equipment and tools

ensuring pressure testing of all BOP equipment is carried out

ensuring rig up to drill out is carried out

monitoring drill out safety processes and test gauge leak off

complete and abandon well

rectifying and/or reporting faults and malfunctions

works effectively with others to plan, prepare and oversee drilling operations that meets all of the required outcomes including:

preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

demonstrates completion of the overseeing drilling operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

obtaining, checking and providing correct equipment and tools

assigning crews to specific jobs

implementing performance measures to monitor operations

carrying out appropriate inspections

arranging servicing, repairing and/or returning equipment

carry out numerical calculations including:

addition, subtraction, multiplication, division

relate normal pressure to temperature

using calculator if required

using estimated skills

basic geometry

use of metric and imperials and conversion between the two

calculations relating to pressure density, volume, height, velocity, length, weight

measurements

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in overseeing drilling operations through:

applying the organisation and site requirements and procedures for:
