Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Plan and prepare to oversee drilling operations
  2. Organise drilling of surface hole
  3. Supervise and participate in nippling up and pressure testing
  4. Organise rig up and rig up to spud

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of overseeing drilling operations including:

identifying, addressing and reporting potential hazards and risks

controlling identified hazards

carrying out emergency response

identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues

preparing written records and reports

obtaining and checking correct equipment and tools

ensuring pressure testing of all BOP equipment is carried out

ensuring rig up to drill out is carried out

monitoring drill out safety processes and test gauge leak off

complete and abandon well

rectifying and/or reporting faults and malfunctions

works effectively with others to plan, prepare and oversee drilling operations that meets all of the required outcomes including:

preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

demonstrates completion of the overseeing drilling operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

obtaining, checking and providing correct equipment and tools

assigning crews to specific jobs

implementing performance measures to monitor operations

carrying out appropriate inspections

arranging servicing, repairing and/or returning equipment

carry out numerical calculations including:

addition, subtraction, multiplication, division

relate normal pressure to temperature

using calculator if required

using estimated skills

basic geometry

use of metric and imperials and conversion between the two

calculations relating to pressure density, volume, height, velocity, length, weight

measurements


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in overseeing drilling operations through:

applying the organisation and site requirements and procedures for:

identifying and managing risks

identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues

setting up work activity

site isolation, signage and erecting barriers

work health and safety

selecting and checking for faults, all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks

blow our prevention (BOP) specifications

casing tools and their applications

equipment types and uses

drill out procedures

testing

rig up to spud procedure

drilling programs

run in and cementing

well abandonment
